A second trampling (where did the first one occur?); this time, by swine.
Note the reference to swine as unclean (inmundos) and the use of
associated words as a racist slur on people of Jewish ancestry in Spain.
Why would these tramplings occur?
The abduction of Don Quijote and Sancho, and their (forced) return to the
palace of the Duke and Duchess.
Capítulo 69:
Note the superlatives in the chapter title.
In this resurrection of Altisidora episode, note the repeated symbols which
refer to: 1) the Inquisition, and 2) the underworld of classical mythology.
(More on this in class.)
Why is Sancho the one who must cause the resurrection/disenchantment?
Capítulo 70:
Altisidora's "vision" of hell (note the inclusion of the False Quijote).
More on the waiting woman theme. Do Don Quijote's remarks on these women
also pertain to the men (hidalgos) of the time?
Capítulo 71:
(Don Quijote and Sancho have left the ducal palace.)
The disenchantment of Dulcinea. Why does Sancho agree to continue with the
lashing? Why does he deceive Don Quijote?
Note the reference to Dido and Aeneas (the painting in the inn), an echo
of the Altisidora episode.
Capítulo 72:
Why does Cervantes have Don Alvaro Tarfe, one of Avellaneda's characters,
appear in this novel?
Note the two Don Quijotes: the Good and the Bad (and the subsequent epithet
of the Good applied to Alonso Quijano). Also, the quote at the bottom of
p. 1055: "como si ... no mostrara claro la diferencia de los dos don Quijotes
y la de los dos sanchos sus obras y sus palabras" ("as if ... the acts
and words of the two Don Quijotes and the two Sanchos did not clearly show
the difference between them"). Compare this with the frequent theme of
nobility/virtue in the novel.
P. 1056. According to Sancho (who is now experienced in these matters) what
is the best kind of victory?
Capítulo 73:
"No la has de ver en todos los días de tu vida" ("You'll never
see it/her again.") Don Quijote interprets this as an omen referring to Dulcinea;
omens were particularly frequent or important at the beginning or end of
a journey.
P. 1060, first line of the second paragraph. What word is used to describe
Quijote's idea of turning shepherd for the year?
Capítulo 74:
Transformation(s)/death: Don Quijote goes to sleep; Who does he wake up as?
What is the reaction of Sancho to this? What does he do?
Why does Alonso/Don Quijote/the Ingenious Gentleman die? (Both from the point
of view of the reader/character and of the author.)
How do you interpret the ending? Is this a tragedy or a victory? (or "just"
life/reality?)
How do you interpret the novel as a whole (and make your interpretation
square with the ending)?
