English L102: Western World Masterpieces II
(Spring 2008)

The purpose of this course is to survey important authors, works, genres, and movements of Western literature from roughly the eighteenth century to the present. Our emphasis will be on the analytical reading of texts, especially formal analysis ("close reading"), within the larger historical, social, and cultural ideas of the time. In addition to shorter works, we will read Voltaire's Candide, Shelley's Frankenstein, and Achebe's Things Fall Apart.
