L101 First Essay Observations

 

If you haven’t read the texts, writing a paper is near impossible

If your paper is heavily based on the first 5 pages of a text we’ve read…

 

Note difference between a citation (which is information about page or line numbers) and a quotation, which is a chunk of primary text in your paper.  They are both essential.  And a paper without any quotations cannot possibly be good.

 

Don’t refer to page or line numbers in your prose (it’s unnecessary, and ugly).

 

BAD:

On page 24, Achilles says that he doesn’t want to fight any more.”

 

GOOD:

Achilles tells his companions, “This fight is no longer for me.” (2.234)

 

 

Remember your audience: don’t tell me the basics of the plot
