Daphnia Day

DAPHNIA

Our second lab project were the effects of tobacco and alcohol on daphnia. Daphnia are small
water fleas that live in freshwater.  They are very small, but can be easily observed under a
microscope.  Their bodies are made from a translucent membrane, which makes us able to see
their inner organs and veins.

When we added alcohol, the daphnia were quite responsive, their heart rate rapidly declined. To revive them from the alcohol, we had to give them adrenalin to restart their hearts.  Their heartsthen  restarted and slowly began pumping again.  When we gave different daphnia tobacco theystarted to violently shake, their heart then responded the same as they did under the alcohol.  Weonce again had to revive the them by giving them adrenalin.  This information shows how harmful these drugs can be.
