Course information

     This course will introduce the student to the literature of Spain and Spanish America through representative selections of poetry and drama. We will analyze the unique qualities of these two genres and will learn the terminology and analytic tools for dealing with them. In addition, we will look at the historical development of these two literary forms in the Hispanic world. The texts that we read will also provide opportunities to discuss Spanish and Spanish-American culture which are reflected in them.

     The student's final grade in the course will be based on the four scheduled tests (15% each), the daily written assignments (25%) and active class participation:

     Substantive class participation is an essential element of this course, and in order to participate, one must be in attendance. More than two absences may have a serious negative impact on one's course grade. All homework and writing assignments must be handed in on the date they are due; late work will be subject to a grade penalty.

     Students are responsible for completing the Cuestionario sections at the end of each work studied. One special writing assignment will involve a five page analysis of a play or poem suggested by the professor.

     No make-up exams will be given unless the professor is notified in advance of the impending absence and the reason for it, or as soon as possible after an emergency.
