Welcome to the Website of
The Cervantes Society of America

The Cervantes Society of America was founded in 1978 and held its first membership meeting in San Francisco in December 1979. The Society's purpose is to advance the study of the life and works of Miguel de Cervantes through the promotion of communication and cooperation among its members, through the publication of reviews of books and articles and reports on pedagogical approaches to Cervantes's work, through descriptions of research currently in progress by members, through discussion at annual meetings, and through such other means as may tend to deepen and broaden understanding of Cervantes and his works. The official languages of the Society are English and Spanish. The Society's Constitution was published in Cervantes 6 (Spring 1986), 91-96.

Officers: The Society's current officers are Frederick De Armas, President (2007-2010); Howard Mancing, Vice President (2007-2010); and Carolyn Nadeau, Secretary-Treasurer. The Executive Council consists of ten members, five of whom are elected by the membership at large, and the other five by regions. Current at-large members are: Bruce Burningham (2007-2008), Steve Hutchinson (2007-2008), Rogelio Miñana (2007-2008), Carolyn Nadeau (2007-2008), and Barbara Simerka (2007-2008). Regional delegates are: Charles Ganelin (Midwest, 2008-2009), William Childers (Northeast, 2008-2009), Adrienne Martin (Pacific Coast, 2008-2009), Ignacio López Alemany (Southeast, 2008-2009), and Christopher Wiemer (Southwest, 2008-2009).

Publications: The Society publishes the journal Cervantes, containing scholarly articles in English and Spanish on Cervantes's life and works, reviews, and notes of interest to cervantistas. The journal appears twice yearly; the latest issue is 28.1 (Spring, 2008 [2008]); all issues are available on-line, although there is a three-month wait period between publishing a new issue and posting it on our website. The Editor of the journal is Tom Lathrop, 270 Indian Road, Newark, Delaware 19711. The Book Review Editor is William H. Clamurro, Division of Foreign Languages, Emporia State University, Emporia, Kansas 66801-5087. The Society's newsletter is edited by Carolyn Nadeau, Secretary-Treasurer; all known newsletters are also on-line.
Also available is Phyllis S. Emerson's Index of Astrana Marin's Vida ejemplar y heroica de Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra, with a Chronology of Cervantes' Life. This digitized version of the index was subsidized by the Cervantes Society of America.

Meetings: The Society holds its annual meetings either in conjunction with the annual convention of the Modern Language Association or, in alternate years, at another site selected by the Executive Council. The annual meetings consist of an open business meeting and several sessions devoted to presentations of papers on topics announced in advance. A call for papers for these meetings is published in the Newsletter.

Membership: Membership is open to all persons interested in Cervantes, and includes subscription to Cervantes and to the Society's Newsletter. Dues are $25.00 a year for individuals, $50 for institutions, $30.00 for couples, and $10.00 for students.
