|S450 Cervantes' Don Quijote||F. Jehle|
Basically, the course involves reading Cervantes' masterpiece *Don Quijote de la Mancha in Spanish, with the hope that the students will understand the novel within its historical and literary context, interpret it at least to some extent for themselves, and appreciate it as a work of art.
Classes will be conducted in Spanish, and will involve both lectures and discussions; students will be expected to present their own views as well as assimilate material offered by the professor as regards other people's views on the novel.
In order to try to gain greater insights into the work, the Quijote will be compared to and contrasted with such re-workings or adaptations as Avellaneda's False Quijote, the musical play Man of La Mancha and/or a television production.
Each student will be required to write a term paper in Spanish on an aspect of the novel. The student's final grade in the course will be based on this term paper (25%), the midterm exam (covering Part I of the Quijote, 25%), the final exam (covering Part II of the novel, 25%), and class participation (25%).
|Grading scale:||A||100 to 90|
