Lecture and Team Learning Activities:  Room CM 340; M - F; 9:30 - 10:25 A.M.
This year there will be a combination of lectures and team learning activities during  this time slot.  For lectures, an outline with corresponding figures will be provided several days before each lecture. The optimal learning situation is to familiarize yourself with the lecture outline and read the assigned chapter in the textbook prior to attending the lecture on a particular day.  For team learning activities, a reading assignment will be made and learning objectives will be distributed; you will be expected to arrive for the team learning activity prepared to discuss the material. To insure that material has been read, an individual or group quiz will take place at the start of the team learning activity. However, the instructor will be responsive to any questions concerning the material prior to the quiz.  For both lectures and team learning, Power Point slides will be available on ANGEL as an overview of the material.  These activities  will facilitate the  integration of information by participation in small group discussions and will place a greater emphasis on active learning.

Laboratory / Problem Based Learning Activity:  Wednesday 12:30 - 3:30 P.M.
Conference:  Friday 11:30 A.M - 12:30 P.M.
These time slots will be used to amplify and reinforce the concepts learned in lecture and for help sessions.  There will be a mixture of  field trips, computer simulations,  patient-oriented problem solving sessions, discussion of clinical case, Internet activities and video tape presentations. Some of these activities will be used to satisfy formative exercises for Level 1 Competency achievement. Evaluation tools, usually a written exercise or quiz (multiple choice/short answer), will be used to monitor preparation and comprehension of handout materials. It is prudent to prepare for these activities by reading and understanding handouts made available.  Make-up work will  be possible only if arranged prior to a scheduled absence. Students will be responsible for written assignments on the due date. These will be graded and calculated with the lab/conference/team learning grade. Occasionally, these time slots will used for unit examinations where the exam is 2 hours in length. The laboratory /conference grade will count for 10% of the final grade, with approximately 1.6% of the lab/conference score for activities associated with each of the six units.

Examinations:
There will be 6 unit exams during the semester at regular intervals (during allocated laboratory / conference period time slot or other arranged time as designated by class majority).   The value of each exam will be approximately 11.65% of the final grade (6 X 11.65% = 70% of final grade).  The exact value of each exam will depend on the number of lectures covered and is noted on the lecture schedule with the exam dates.  This may change slightly, depending on negotiated exam date changes. The final exam will be a comprehensive shelf exam from the National Board of Medical Examiners and will be 20% of the final grade.   A passing grade must be achieved on the comprehensive final to pass the course.

Grading:   An evaluation of your performance will be determined on the following scheme:
92 - 100 % = Honors;  84 - 91.9 %  =  High Pass;  75 - 83.9 %  =  Pass;  Below 74.9 % =  Fail
