Leader Analysis
Due at Beginning of Class on Tuesday, November 22

One of the ways you find data on what does and doesn't work for leadership is by talking to leaders about their work.  This assignment is your opportunity to gather some of that data.

Get permission from someone you respect as a leader to interview then for about 30-45 minutes about their philosophy and experience as a leader.

If you've taken an interviewing class like COM 325 or OLS 342, use what you've learned there to structure the interview and to phrase the questions you ask

You'll want to find out 1) some background about them: their current title and position, their educational experience, 2) how they've learned what they know about leadership and communication, 3) what changes or transformations at their current or previous workplace they're known for and how they used communication in leading change, 4) some examples of their leadership that they're particularly proud of, and 5) what they believe makes someone a good leader and a good communicator

Of course, you'll need to take notes or record the interview so you can capture what they said

Now use what you learn from this interview to write an essay in which you report on how they answered the above questions, integrating 1) how what they said follows (or doesn't follow) what you've learned in the readings and/or lectures in this class and 2) how what they said follows (or doesn't follow) what you've seen them do as a leader.

The best papers will have reasonably detailed analysis and display insight and skill in writing.  Each paper should be between three and five pages in length.  It should be typed (double spaced, margins of 1" all around, font no smaller than 10 and no larger than 12).  It should also be stapled.  Your paper should conform to APA style (either 5th ed, 2001 or 6th ed, 2009). Of course, keep a copy of your paper.

•Make sure you do everything called for in these directions.
•Don’t wait to do this! Take your time, and use the services of the Writing Center if you need to.
•You are encouraged to show me a draft in person and to ask questions about this assignment either in person or via e-mail.

Depending on what you write about, these papers can be useful for any of these sections of the portfolio you're working on in the COM 120/308/480 or 499 sequence of classes.  We'll talk a little about how in class:

- Explain communication concepts and theories relevant to their major
- Explain, apply, and evaluate the processes involved in productive conflict in the contexts  relevant to their major
- Demonstrate the ability to be a critically engaged citizen
- Evaluate interpersonal and/or group interactions
- Communicate competently (effectively, appropriately, ethically) interpersonally and/or in groups
