COM 557, Spring 2011 – Reading Guide Questions for February 1

For Ramsey (1999)

Begin by reviewing the facts of the Simpson case on pages 31-34.

1. As you read the rest of the article, what communication theories that she doesn't discuss but which you've learned about in other classes came to mind as relevant to analysis of to the Simpson case?  We'll save this question to discuss after the others, but have it in mind as you read the rest of the article.

2. In the section entitled "II. The Courtroom Communication Plan" on pp. 34-36, what unique aspects of courtroom communication does Ramsey identify?  Is the advice given in the last paragraph of that section consistent with what you've learned in other classes?

3. In what ways is the analysis and theory in the section entitled "III. Persuasive Messages Theory" consistent with what you've learned in other classes?  In what ways isn't it?

4. In what ways is the analysis and theory in the section entitled "IV. Social Judgment Theory" consistent with what you've learned in other classes?  In what ways isn't it?

5. In what ways is the analysis and theory in the section entitled "V. Cultural Communication Theory" consistent with what you've learned in other classes?  In what ways isn't it?

6.  OK, now let's go back and discuss Question 1.

For Style Manual Ch. 1

1. Flip through pp. 1-6 to familiarize yourself with/review your knowledge of com journals

2. For pp. 6-11, let's have a few minutes of geeky library fun:

    a. Look on the Helmke Library web site to see if we get Communication Abstracts.  Do we?

    b. You already know about Communication and Mass Media Complete.  Do any of the other resources on pp. 7-11 look useful to you?  Why?  Does Helmke Library get them?

For Style Manual Ch. 2

Scan the advice they give on separating the good stuff from the not so good stuff.  What's particularly relevant for writing a research paper for a 500-level class?  What, if anything, seems wrong?

For Style Manual Ch. 3

Focus your reading on "Composing an Annotated Bibliography," pp. 25-26, "Composing a Research Critique," pp. 26-27, and "Composing a Review of Literature, pp. 28-29.  What's particularly relevant for writing a research paper for a 500-level class?  What didn't you already know?
