COM 557, Spring 2011 – Reading Guide Questions for February 8


For Pfau, et al:

1. So the big, overarching goal of this paper is what?

2. What exactly is cultivation?  What exactly is resonance?  What is their link to peoples' perceptions of attorneys and the practice of law?

3. Here's an ignorant question: For those of you who take media classes, are these concepts still used in the literature?

4. Where does more of your perception of attorneys and the practice of law come from, TV or direct experience?

5. In your own words, What are Pfau, et al's three hypotheses?  In what prior work are they grounded?

6. So there were three phases of this study.  In your own words, what were they and why were they done?

7. In the content analysis, what did they code for?

8. What did they look for in the mail survey of attorneys?

9. What did they look for in the random phone survey?

10.  What did they find for each of the three hypotheses?

11. How does the discussion section account for their findings?  Does this explanation make sense to you?

12.  Are these findings consistent with your own perception of lawyers?  Are these findings consistent with your own perception of how lawyers are depicted on TV?

For Stern:

According to Stern and the people he cites, what impact does TV have on juror expectations?  Do these make sense to you?  Is this consistent with Pfau, et al?

For Davis:

According to Davis and the people she cites, how does Law & Order impact how people perceive attorneys?  Is this consistent with Pfau, et al?
