Course Description

This course has two components. In the first part, we shall be learning about basic computer concepts that will help you understand the working of computer hardware and software. The instructor will explain these concepts through lectures, demonstrations and in-class exercises. You will be expected to use the computer labs outside of class hours to complete the assignments and to gain experience on using the machines. The second part of the course shall focus briefly on two operating systems - DOS and Windows 95. The style of instruction in this part will be mostly hands-on.

Do understand that this course serves as a foundation for the later computer courses that you might be taking. A good understanding of the basic concepts will make your future learning experiences easier. Retain the texts and the notes for later reference.

Assignments, Examination and Grading: Your grade shall be determined on the basis of three components.

(i) In-class assignments: You will be asked to complete 4 in-class assignments. You will be given these assignments during the class and will have to complete them in class. Each assignment will be worth 5%. If you are absent from that class, you will be allowed to submit the assignment during the next class meeting. Assignments submitted later than that will be penalized at the rate of one point per day.

(ii) Out-of-class assignments: You will be expected to complete three sets of out-of-class assignments. Each set will be worth 10% of your final grade. Late assignments will be penalized at the rate of one point per day.

(iii) You will be expected to give a comprehensive final examination on the last day of class. The exam will be worth 50% of your final grade. The exam shall be one hour long and shall include multiple-choice/short-answer questions as well as a hands-on component. Approximately 70% of the exam shall be from the Computer Concepts text while the rest will be from the DOS and Windows 95 portion of the course. You will be expected to bring two blank, formatted disks to the exam with your name on the label.

A score of 90% or more will earn you an A grade; 80-89% a B, 70-79% a C, 60-69& a D. A Score of less than 60% will result in an F. This scheme may be altered at the discretion of the professor.
