The manager of a clothing store decided to investigate the relationship between the number of sales clerks on duty and the amount of merchandise lost due to shoplifting and other causes. The dollar volume of lost was recorded for each of the 12 weeks. The data is given below:

  • Using Excel 97, calculate the correlation between the number of clerks present and the losses due to shoplifting and other causes. (Insert the correlation coefficient value in the same sheet as the data) 
  • Format your worksheet such that it’s presentable (You might want to highlight the correlation co-efficient and its value).

Understanding the concept

Answer the following questions (You may either write on the print out, or type your answers on a separate page using a word-processor).

  • What is the value of the correlation coefficient? Does it suggest a strong relation or a weak relation?

  • Is the value negative or positive? If so, what does that mean? Can the manager conclude that an increase in the number of clerks means reduced theft?  Explain.  (Keep in mind the limitations of the correlation coefficient)
  • Give an example of a situation where you, as a manager, might want to use this correlation technique.
