PREREQUISITE:
There is no prerequisite for BUFW A533.

TEXTBOOK:
Survey of Accounting, C. Warren, Second Edition, South-Western, 2004.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:
The overall objective of BUFW A533 is to provide a working knowledge of how individuals (e.g., managers, investors, creditors, etc.) use information generated by financial and managerial accounting systems to make decisions about business entities. BUFW A533 emphasizes the user perspective when analyzing accounting information presented in the financial statements or internal reports of a firm. However, an individual cannot competently use accounting information unless that individual understands how that information is processed and presented. Therefore, BUFW A533 will also emphasize and provide students with an understanding of:
  1. principles that govern the ways in which information about a business is recorded in the financial accounting system.
  2. procedures that are used to collect the information disclosed in the financial reports of a business.
  3. ways in which the information collected by the accounting system is reported to decision makers and how business decisions impact the financial statements of a business entity.
  4. managerial accounting topics such as costing systems, cost control, and budgeting.
GRADE ASSIGNMENT:
Grades will be based on the following 350 point distribution:

  1. Exam 1 (Chapters 1-3, 5-6), 100 points
  2. Exam 2 (Chapters 7-10), 100 points
  3. Exam 3 (Chapters 11-13, 15), 100 points
  4. Annual Report Project, 50 points

Your grade will be based on the total points you accumulate during the semester. The grading scale will be discussed in class by the instructor, but will normally be A = 90-100%, B = 80-89%, C = 70-79%, D = 60%-69%, F = below 60%. Exams will not be comprehensive beyond that which builds upon prior material and will primarily consist of multiple choice and short problems.

Failure to take a scheduled exam without being excused in advance of the exam will result in a grade of zero. Calculators may be used on exams. However, calculators that can be programmed and/or display text are not permitted. Click on the appropriate exam in the following list to access a review sheet for that exam:

Exam 1 Review Sheet
Exam 2 Review Sheet

HOMEWORK:
On the attached assignment sheet, a number of Exercises and Problems are assigned and will be covered in class as an integral part of the lecture.

The instructor will distribute two Annual Report Surveys (ARS) which can also be accessed at the following web addresses:

Annual Report Survey 1
Annual Report Survey 2

You should complete these surveys using the 2002 Steel Dynamics Annual Report which is available on the following website:

www.steeldynamics.com

Although not graded, these problems will help familiarize you with the 2002 Steel Dynamics Annual Report which is used as a basis for the Annual Report Project discussed in the next section.

ANNUAL REPORT PROJECT:
The Annual Report Project requires you to use the 2002 Steel Dynamics Annual Report and other data resources to locate relevant information about that firm as well as determine how well the company has performed. The project will be distributed in class and will address topics not covered in the Annual Report Surveys throughout the semester. As noted above, a copy of the annual report is available on the web at:

www.steeldynamics.com

Specific instructions for printing the web version of the annual report are located at the following address:

users.ipfw.edu/slaubau/a533arpf03.htm

The annual report is due at the beginning of class on Monday, December 8. Late projects will not be accepted and will receive a grade of zero.
