The Marlowe Society of America
We are a non-profit organization of scholars formed over thirty years ago to promote research and scholarship on Marlowe’s life, works, and times, as well as his relationships with his fellow playwrights and his crucial role in early modern stage history. Each year, we sponsor two sessions at the annual meeting of the Modern Language Association of America, including this past year in Philadelphia, and next year in Los Angeles. Every two years we award the Roma Gill prize for the best new work on Marlowe. Every five years, we sponsor an international conference: our seventh will be in Staunton, Virginia, June 24-28, 2013.
We seek to promote scholarship and to provide information about meetings, publications, productions, and events of interest to Marlovians and to those who study early modern literary history.
We Have Elected a New President
Our new president is Prof. Paul Menzer of Mary Baldwin College, formerly Secretary of the Marlowe Society. We extend our congratulations to him, as well as our gratitude to and admiration for our former president, Roslyn L. Knutson.
International Conference in Staunton, VA, 24-28 June, 2013
Plans are currently underway for the Seventh International Conference of the MSA. See this page for details, which we will update as information becomes available.

Film Adaptation of The Jew of Malta
Director Douglas Morse’s film version of The Jew of Malta is currently in production and will be released through the Films for the Humanities and Sciences in 2012. The Fall issue of the Newsletter features an interview with him to bring our members up to date on all the details. In the meantime, visit http://www.jewofmalta.com to view a promotional film clip and learn more about the project. Pre-orders of the DVD are available on the site; make a $100 donation, and you will receive a DVD licensed for classroom use, a savings of over $200. Other donation levels—and their accompanying gifts—are available on the site as well.
Roma Gill Prize
The winner of the 2011 prize is Patrick Cheney’s Marlowe’s Republican Authorship: Lucan, Liberty, and the Sublime. The MSA offers its congratulations for a job well done.

Christopher Marlowe Rose
This rose (Ausjump) was first bred by David Austin Ltd. and introduced at the 2002 Chelsea Flower Show. The grower reports: “This rose is of a colour not usually associated with English Roses: an intense orange-red, paling a little to salmon–pink on the outer petals as the flower ages.
We need all colours if we are to fulfil all the requirements of the garden. Christopher Marlowe should be useful whenever a bright splash of red is required. The flowers are rosette–shaped; the outer petals reflexing a little. The growth is short but very vigorous, with numerous stems arising from the base and later branching to give a continuous flow of flowers. The result is a free-flowering, nicely rounded shrub.” It is even available as a postage stamp design (U.S.) The picture above was taken by our fellow member Bruce Brandt, who grew this enviably handsome sample in his own garden.
Get Your Marlowe Hoodie, T-Shirt, Mug
There is an outfit that makes customizable apparel, from dog clothing to hoodies, and it has created a market for Marlowe and famous quotations from his plays.
It is highly amusing, especially when one considers the possibilities: a MSA softball team or cheerleading squad. Maybe even bowling shirts.
