The Stonewall Jackson Hotel (http://www.stonewalljacksonhotel.com) is about 30 steps from the Blackfriars playhouse. Some events connected to the Marlowe International Conference will be located in the facility. The hotel will offer registrants a special rate of $99 per night. Click here.

Howard Johnson’s (http://www.hojo.com) is about 6 relatively flat and easy blocks from the Blackfriars playhouse. A complimentary breakfast is available. The going rate is approximately $60 per night.

There are other motels around Staunton, but none in easy walking distance. Check http://www.visitstaunton.com for other options, such as bed-and-breakfast lodging.

Note: since the conference begins on Tuesday the 25th and ends late on Friday the 28th, those who attend are advised to make their reservations beginning on Monday night the 24th.


By car:

Staunton, VA, is at the intersection of US Interstate 81 North and 64 East/West. For those within a reasonable distance, driving is the best way to get there.

By plane:

Washington, DC, has two airports: Dulles (IAD) and Reagan (DCA). Unless a connection is made to Shenandoah (SHD, below), both require a drive close to three hours, depending on traffic.

Weyers Cave, VA (Shenandoah [SHD]) is the closest airport to Staunton; it is about 30 miles north of Staunton. Currently out of Dulles (IAD), United (Silver Express) is offering three flights to SHD: at 8:10 am (arr. SHD @ 9:02); 12:45 pm (arr. @ SHD 1:37), and 10:05 pm (arr. SHD @ 10:57). There is one return currently being advertised: lv. SHD @ 6:30 am, arr. IAD @ 7:17 am). There are no flights currently advertised from Washington National (Reagan) to SHD.

Special notice: for those participants who are using Shenandoah Valley Regional Airport (SHD), MSA has secured a special $20 round-trip rate for shuttle service to and from Staunton. Passengers may pay on arrival but must make advance reservations. Please call SHD Shuttle at 540.234.8304 between 7.30-3.30 M-F and ask for Debbie McAllister. Conference organizers are currently considering setting up a shuttle service from SHD to Staunton. Watch this space for developments.

Charlottesville, VA (CHO) is about 50 miles from Staunton, but the drive is an easy one. Travelers might want to coordinate their arrivals and share a rental car.

Richmond and Roanoke are worth checking, but both represent drives close to two hours.

By train:

Amtrak runs a train to and from Staunton, VA, but not every day. Currently, there is a train from Union Station, Washington, DC (WAS), to Staunton (STA) on Sundays, lv. @ 11:05 am, arr. @ 2:59 pm (4 hrs). The return to Union Station (WAS) leaves Staunton, also on a Sunday @1:37 pm, arr. @ 6:06 (4 1/2 hrs). The cost each way is $32.00. Those who plan to work at the Folger Shakespeare Library before and/or after the Marlowe International Conference may find the train the most convenient way to travel, if no one minds having a day extra in Staunton before and after the conference.

By bus:

There is no bus service on Greyhound or Megabus from Union Station, DC to Staunton, VA.
