CHM 266 Spring 2008 Organic Chemistry Lab
Experiment 4 Free Radical
Chlorination
Please fill out the report in the following order
A. Your Name (-0.5 pt. if missing)
B. Date (-0.5
pt. if missing)
C. Experiment
Title and Number (-0.5 pt. if missing)
D. (6 pt.) Write the mechanism of reaction including initialization and propagation steps and show the formation of primary, secondary and tertiary chloride from 2,4-dimethylpentane (-0.5 pt. if missing each one)
E. (10 pt.) Calculate the ratio yield of primary, secondary and tertiary chloride in your sample based
on GC results. If you have more than three fragments in your GC, calculate the
ratio only based on the last three fragments. Then based on the calculation on
Wade page 144 calculate the relative reactivity of primary, secondary and
tertiary hydrogens towards chlorination.
F. (4 pt.) Staple gas chromatograms to your
report. (possible deductions for poor quality)
