Course Description
A study of communication theories applied to speech; practical communicative experiences ranging from interperesonal communication and small-group process through discussion to speaking in standard speaker-audience situations. (3 credits)

Course Goals and Objectives
Upon completion of Com 114 students should be able to:

  1. Speak precisely, clearly, and persuasively
  2. Listen actively and with comprehension
  3. Formulate and assess their own arguments as well as the arguments of others
  4. Understand basic principles of small group communication, interpersonal communication and public speaking
  5. Work in an increasingly diverse society
  6. Demonstrate computer literacy
These course goals are based upon applicable General Education desired student outcomes, and also reflect the core goals for COM 114.

Successful completion of COM 114 fulfills the communication component of IPFW General Education Area I.

Course Assignments
All assignment must be completed.

  1. Informative Speech: 5 minutes in length. Students will provide an outline on the day of the speech.
  2. Persuasive Speech: 7 minutes in length. Students will provide an outline and a bibliography/reference list on the day of the speech.

    The Speech Evaluation form indicates the criteria on which the speech will be evaluated. Use the form to guide you in preparing your speech. Each student must fill out speech evaluation forms for two (2) speeches given by classmates for each presentation. Failure to turn in the evaluation forms will result in a 10% reduction in your grade for that speech

  3. Interpersonal paper - a short essay utilizing the concepts of interpersonal communication to assess a specific interaction (real or fictional).
  4. Group presentation - a project designed to involve and to articulate the principles of group communication. The results of the project will be delivered in an oral presentation in which all members of the group will participate. Each group member will be responsible for documenting their participation. The Group presentation will include preparation of a Web site

Course assignments and examinations will be weighted as follows:

Course Policies

  1. You are expected to attend class.
  2. All assignments must be completed in order to earn a passing grade.
  3. Class presentations are scheduled in advance. Failure to appear on a day when you are assigned to perform will result in a grade of "F" for that assignment (see above).
  4. Grading: Exams count for 40% of you final grade. However, you must have a passing average (60%) on exams and a passing average (60%) on non-exam assignments in order to pass the course overall. This requirement has been determined by the COM 114 Course Director at IPFW. It is not negotiable.
  5. No late assignments will be accepted. Due dates for assignments are stated on the syllabus.
  6. All assignments should be typed or computer printed except by instructor's permission.
