Course Description
A study of communication theories applied to speech; practical communicative
experiences ranging from interpresonal communication and small-group process through
discussion to speaking in standard speaker-audience situations. (3 credits)
Course Objectives
- You will develop your understanding of the basic process of human communication.
- You will learn the basic elements of effective public speaking, interpersonal communication
and group communication in order to be a more effective communicator in interpersonal, group and public
situations.

- Communication in Our Lives, Second Edition by Julia T. Wood
- Student Companion to Communication in Our Lives by Julia T. Wood
The Student Companion contains materials that enhance the text and
the class in general. You can read and use it in conjunction with the text readings.
You can bring the Companion to each class to help you contribute to class
discussions and exercises. The Manual can be sold back to the Book Store if
returned immediately.

Course Assignments
All assignment must be completed in order to recieve
a passing grade in this course.
- Informative Speech: 3-5 minutes in length. Students will also provide an outline on
the day of the speech. Students will evaluate all speeches by group
members for 10% of the grade.

- Persuasive Speech: 3-5 minutes in length. Students will provide an outline and a
bibliography on the day of the speech. Students will also evaluate
one speech from outside of the group for 10% of the grade.
- Interpersonal paper - a short essay utilizing the concepts of interpersonal
communication to
assess a specific human interaction or presentation (real or fictional).
- Group presentation - a project designed to involve the principles of group communication. The
results of the project will be delivered in an oral presentation in which all members of the
group will participate. Each group member will be responsible for documenting their
participation.
Grading
Course assignments and examinations
will be weighted as follows:

| Interpersonal Paper | 200 points |
| Examination #1 | 200 points |
| Examination #2 | 200 points |
| Total | 1000 points |

The final grade will be based on the following scale:

| 1000-890 points | A |
| 889-790 points | B |
| 789-700 points | C |
| 699-600 points | D |
| 599 points-below | F |
Course Policies
- You are expected to attend class.
- All assignments must be completed in order to earn a passing grade.
- Class presentations are scheduled in advance. Failure to appear without prior approval
on the day you
are
assigned to present will result in a grade of "F" for that assignment (see above).
- Grading: Exams count for 40% of you final grade. However, you must have a passing
average (60%) on exams and a passing average (60%) on non-exam assignments in order
to pass the course overall. This requirement has been determined by the Department of Communication at Purdue University and the COM 114
Course Director at IPFW. It is not negotiable.
- No late assignments will be accepted without prior approval. Due dates for assignments are stated on the syllabus.
- All assignments should be typed or computer printed except by instructor's permission.
