This is a more-modern structure from the Soviet period - the television broadcast tower on Kok Tobe hill. It is the tallest structure in the city and can be seen from almost any location in and around Almaty. It is very similar to the television towers found in most Soviet cities of any size. Its counterpart in Moscow is the second tallest structure in the world. The Moscow tower recently suffered from a fire, demonstrating one problem with concentrating television broadcasts at one location - except for those having cable (a small portion) Moscow residents were without television for some days until the fire was extinguished and temporary broadcast facilities began operation. Both satellite and cable television is available in Almaty.
