Russian Government in Central Asia - 1890s
After Russia took effective control of Central Asia in the 1850s, it was divided into administrative districts which reflected the pre-existing ethnic groupings. Some native governments retained limited power, subject to Russian oversight. The current borders of the Central Asian republics were established by the Soviet Union.
