Technical Specifications for Written Submissions
All Courses, All Times

NOTE: These rules to NOT apply to the forms portion of tax-return assignments

PAPER:

8 1/2 x 11 (standard U.S. size)
White
No less than "16 pound" (standard for copiers is 20 pound)

MARGINS:

ALL margins (top, bottom, sides) = no less than 1.0" and no more than 1.25"

PRINTING, etc.:

All papers must be typed or computer-printed. While laser-printing may be preferred, it is not required so long as printing is sufficiently dark and clear that it can be easily read in normal lighting.

The type style should be one that is easily read. One of the standards such as "Times New Roman", "Univers", "Arial", are acceptable. Fancy or whimsical fonts must be avoided.

The type size for the text should be "10-point" or "12-point" but headings, subheadings, etc., can be in larger (or a different) font to make them obvious, if that is deemed desirable.

Copies made on a standard copy machine are acceptable, IF the copy is essentially as clear as an original. Sometimes copies are more clear than an original if the printer uses a ribbon and the ribbon is nearing the end of its useful life.

IDENTIFICATION:

Each submission must have a "cover page" that states:

Student's Name
Course and section number and Term
Assignment/submission title
Submission Date

Each page of a submission, other than the cover page, must be numbered within the top margin, near the right margin. The submitting student's name should be included at the same location. (This information can be in 8- or 9-point type, if it is legible.) Doing this can be easy using the "header" function on most word processing programs. Be aware, however, that those programs may put the "header" inside (lower than) the required margin – if that is the case, the top margin must be adjusted (made smaller) so that the first line of text is at the required location (1" to 1.25" from top of paper).

PAGE COUNT:

If the assignment requires a specific minimum or maximum number of pages, pages less than one-half filled (measured from top margin to bottom margin)

ELECTRONIC SUBMISSION:

If electronic submission of papers is permitted (by class or individual), the following rules apply:

Fax: Faxed submissions should conform in every respect to the preceding rules. A faxed submission must conform to all the preceding rules - the identification-line that many fax machines add to a faxed page will be considered a violation of the rules.

E-mail: A paper submitted by "e-mail" or equivalent must be submitted as an attachment to an e-mail, not as an e-mail message. Attachments must be in either "WordPerfect" or Microsoft "Word" format. When printed from the e-mailed attachment, the final paper must conform to all of the preceding rules.

Other: If a paper is submitted through an Internet-based program, such as "WebCT," that program may make it difficult to insure compliance with all of the preceding rules. However, within the limitations imposed by the program, submissions should conform as closely to those rules as possible.

As usual, if a student has any questions or is certain about these rules or their application in any particular circumstance, it is best to obtain answers / clarification from the instructor BEFORE submitting a paper.
