Closer, Zagorsk's religious complex resembles a walled fortress, which it probably was when it was first established.

During the Soviet era, religious institutions (including this one) were closed. The buildings were used for various state purposes, such as museums, factories, offices, residences, etc. Since the dissolution of the Soviet Union, many religious buildings have been, or are being, restored to their former use and condition. While Zagorsk is a common tour stop, more of its visitors are Russians who visit for religious purposes or as a recreational outing on a fine summer day.
