MAPS of the "Silk Road"
This map has bright graphics, but does not include western portions of the route - perhaps because the traders followed established regional routes in what is now the Middle East. It also does not include the more northerly routes toward Eastern Europe - perhaps because those routes were generally military, not commercial.

This map includes the northern route into Russia, but not the southerly ones into the Middle East. Which shows that the "Silk Road" was not a specific route, like U.S. I-69, but a more general pattern of trade travel between western China and the eastern parts of Europe and the Mediterranean area.
