Inside, it is another world - the photo does not begin to do it justice. The building runs along all four sides of the lot, abutting either the street or the adjacent building and forming a hollow square. Walking through an open archway, one enters a courtyard - this particular one being about 30 - 35 feet square. About 3/4ths of the courtyard is open to the sky but the rear part is covered by a roof about 25 feet up. The column in the foreground supports the outer edge of that roof, the underside of which is normally painted in intricate designs. The door at the far left lead to an anteroom used for service and an entryway to the large two-story room that is behind all the other doors (and another set or two). That large room was/is used to entertain guests, serve formal meals, and to show off the family treasures.

The courtyard is paved with stones. Underneath is a large storage area which would stay considerably cooler during the summer months. Sleeping and work rooms are in the buildings along the other three walls. In this home, many of those rooms have been converted into hotel-like rooms for guests, each with their own bath. Some "bed and breakfast" establishments have fewer bathrooms than guest rooms.
