The Kukeldash medressh was built in 1514. It is new compared to the minaret that stands beside it - that was built in 1127. Both buildings have been restore, probably more than once. As can be seen, the outer wall is now a site to display carpets for sale. Carpets from this area have been known, for hundreds of years and throughout the world, for high quality and excellent craftsmanship. The designs of in these carpets are traditional, except perhaps for the light-colored background on a few of them. Carpets such as these have been used for hundreds of years throughout western and central Asia.
In the "yurts" of more wealthy Central Asians, carpets covered both the floors and walls, acting both as decoration and insulation. The carpets survived many years of use far more strenuous than they would suffer in a modern home. Even today, in many homes throughout the former USSR, one sees carpets similar to these on both walls and floors - now more for decorative purposes than for insulation.
