The International Women in French Association, an Allied Organization of the Modern Language Association, exists to promote the study of women writers and women in civilization in the French-speaking world. It has now 450 members from The United States, Canada, England, France, Italy, Spain, Greece, Israel, Turkey, etc.
an issue of WIF Studies, a refereed journal, with selected articles by WIF members (in French or English). Among these articles is the winner of WIF's Graduate Student Essay Prize, a competition opened to all those enrolled in relevant doctoral programs. We also sponsor an Undergraduate Essay Contest.
Members also receive two issues of the Newsletter containing annotated bibliographies (for example: Senegalese Women Writers in 1995, Women Poets in 1998, Haitian Women Authors in 2000), calls for papers, announcements, a list of recent publications by WIF members, reports on regional MLA conference where WIF sessions are regularly held, reports on books and films of interest to the whole membership, etc.
In addition, WIF members have access to a membership directory on the WIF website, and two listserves, a general one and one devoted to pedagogical issues.
At the MLA Annual Meeting, WIF organizes two paper-reading sessions, plus a business meeting which is also a social event. Current President: Mary Rice-Defosse.
Finally, WIF organizes international conferences on a regular basis (Scripps College in Claremont, CA in 2004).
