DUTIES:  The College of Arts & Letters at Michigan State University seeks a Director for its newly-established Center for the Support of Language Teaching.  The successful candidate will be tenured (at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor) in one of the three Language Departments at Michigan State University: 1) French, Classics, and Italian; 2) Linguistics and Germanic, Slavic, Asian and African Languages; 3) Spanish and Portuguese.  The mission of the Center is to coordinate and assist with the implementation of language-related activities in the College of Arts & Letters and to promote global awareness amongst language students in the College.  The goal is to enhance and streamline language instruction in and outside of the classroom across the language units, with the ultimate result being an improved instructional environment for all languages.

The duties of the Director are to oversee all activities associated with the Center.  This includes providing vision for future activities within the university and outreach activities that involve the local community.  It is anticipated that the new Center will provide a focal point for foreign/second language research and practice at Michigan State University.  In addition to the responsibilities of the Directorship, the Director will teach graduate courses in his/her area of expertise.  These courses will be directed at graduate students in the College whose language backgrounds span the languages of the College.

QUALIFICATIONS:

The successful candidate will have a Ph.D. in Second Language Studies, Applied Linguistics or closely-related field and extensive research experience in Second Language Studies or in any of the languages taught at MSU.  In addition to the candidate’s particular area of research expertise, it is anticipated that the new Director will have a background in one or more of the focal areas of the Center (Technology, Curriculum, Co-Curricular activities, Cultural/literature integration, Assessment, Professional Development).

African Literature position

The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign seeks a full-time tenure track Assistant Professor in African literature, starting August 16, 2009.  The successful candidate will hold a joint appointment in two of three departments (Comparative and World Literature, English, and French), depending on areas of specialization. TENURE TRACK, ASSOCIATE, OR FULL PROFESSOR POSITION IN FRENCH, BEGINNING SEPTEMBER 1, 2009. EXPERTISE IN LES FRANCOPHONIES D’AMERIQUE and experience teaching French language at all levels. Native or near-native abilities in French and English, an excellent teaching record, and significant scholarship in the specialist field. A commitment to integrate French and Francophone Studies at all levels of the curriculum required. Secondary expertise in interdisciplinary cultural studies and/or Francophone expertise (e.g. Belgium or Switzerland) that complements existing areas of specialization in the department desirable. For this position, in which the successful candidate will be part of an energetic department committed to providing the best possible instruction to talented undergraduates, we are particularly interested in individuals with excellent organizational skills and administrative experience.
