Primary Area of specialization: The History and Development of the Novel

The department is seeking candidates whose strong teaching skills and
innovative research will significantly contribute to its renewal and
to the broadening of the French and Francophone curriculum. We are
especially interested in candidates with the ability to make their
respective fields of expertise relevant to students in a liberal arts
environment. Candidates should have expertise in literature and
culture, with a primary focus on one or more of the following fields:
the history and development of the Novel, with solid background in
intellectual history, cultural, social or political theory, as
connected to the Novel, colonial narratives, emergence of new
discourses in literature and media (medical, economic, artistic,
legal, new mappings of the world), representations of technology in
the novel (photography, painting, dance, etc.), travel narratives, the
urbanization of the novel, etc. Secondary area of specialization
desirable: North American or European francophone literature and
culture outside of France, poetry, theatre, visual culture.


French/ German

Central College
invites applications for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor to begin August 2010.  Qualifications include a Ph.D., although ABD will also be considered, rank to be determined according to qualifications.  The department seeks a generalist in either French or German with the ability to teach elementary-level language courses in the other. Candidates should demonstrate evidence of superior undergraduate language teaching, and experience with proficiency-based language instruction.  Optional desirable attributes include OPI certification and the ability to contribute to teacher preparation.

The Department of Romance Languages at St. Olaf College, Northfield, Minnesota announces a full-time, tenure-track position in French at the level of Instructor, Assistant Professor or Associate Professor. The position offers to a candidate committed to undergraduate liberal arts education the opportunity to teach in a unique content-based curriculum enhanced by a January term abroad, a language across the curriculum program, and area and interdisciplinary studies. Teaching responsibilities include all levels of French language and major-level courses in the literatures and cultures of the French-speaking world.  Specialization open, but particular interest in francophone world desirable. Required: Demonstrated excellence in undergraduate teaching, promise of continuing high quality scholarly activity, sustained residential experience in one or more French-speaking countries, native or near-native language ability. Ph.D. preferred.  Rank dependent upon qualifications.  The person hired at the rank of Associate Professor will be considered for tenure after a short probationary period.

African Literature position

The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign seeks a full-time tenure track Assistant Professor in African literature, starting August 16, 2009.  The successful candidate will hold a joint appointment in two of three departments (Comparative and World Literature, English, and French), depending on areas of specialization. Colby College is seeking a Faculty Fellow in French with expertise in Early Modern France for a one-year sabbatical replacement to begin September 1, 2010. Native or near-native abilities in French and English, an excellent teaching record, and promising scholarship in the specialist field. A commitment to integrate French and Francophone Studies at all levels of the curriculum required. For this position, in which the successful candidate will be part of an energetic department committed to providing the best possible instruction to undergraduates, we are particularly interested in individuals with experience teaching French language at all levels.
