“Socialism” (or the dynamic between individual and collective) and "Peak Oil" (or Hubbert Peak) and/ or "Permaculture" ("human systems" based on "natural ecologies")
1) Personal-connection essay (5 pages/ 1250 words)
A reflective narrative that expresses your personal connection to the research topic chosen for the semester. This will serve as the first “chapter” of your portfolio.
2) DO SOME READING: (think about what you read/ read about what you think) Please include three good sources within your essay.
Due: Tuesday, February 14 , 2012
Length: approx. 1000-1250 words
Format: hard copy (print it), MLA format- NO LATE SUBMISSIONS WILL BE ACCEPTED.
Some thoughts that may help: Where did you first encounter the word, “socialism” and what did/ does it mean to you? Have you ever heard of "Peak Oil?" Has this perspective changed since you began your preliminary reading? What about "Permaculture?" How about the "occupy" movement or current "intellectual property" laws/ treaties? What did you read? Most important: how do you propose to customize these very large concept(s) into a manageable Expository portfolio? What are some of your working definitions of the terms involving your topic?
You need not answer all (or any) of these questions. Synthesize your personal connection to the topic.
