These are MEMES:
"Freedom"
Complex ideas that form themselves into distinct memorable units. This semester we will "unpack" some of these memes. How did these complex ideas "form themselves?" What do we THINK we are remembering?
If a complex idea is like the layers of an onion, a MEME is the onion placed in a punch press and pressed to the size of a pinhead. This way, a very large and complex idea can fit in a very small space.
Am I one of those LIBERALS David Horowitz warned students about in his address at Amherst College? I suppose I am. If Horowitz is calling for a more balanced perspective, there's nothing wrong with that.
Besides,
I am only an Instructor.
"Why of course the people don't want war ... But after all it is the leaders of the country who determine the policy, and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy, or a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship ...Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is to tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger."
--Hermann Goering, Nazi leader, at the Nuremberg Trials after World War II
