Thomas Southwell ( born: England - immigrated to Geneva, Ohio 1852) + Alice Johnson
History: Cora Southwell-Billings' mother (Anna) Maria came from England. Anna Maria Carduff and her younger sister Elizabeth ran away from home because of a cruel stepmother, who among other things, supposedly cut Maria’s long blond curly hair and sold it for making wigs. They came to the United States to stay with the girls’ uncle John Duff, who operated a blacksmith shop on Summit Street in Toledo, Ohio. When the uncle discovered that the girls had run away from home, he wanted to send them back to England but Maria refused. Since she had some money of her own, she went to Cleveland, Ohio. When her money was gone she went to Mentor, Ohio where she found work with a family named Garfield. Maria became engaged to marry the Garfield son, James. However, one evening while Maria and James were engaged, he took her to a dance at Harpers Corners, near Ashtabula. Here she met a young fiddler named Johnson Trigg Southwell. They fell in love and were married and became the parents of eleven children. The Garfield boy - born in 1831, became an Ohio Republican Politician 1863 to 1881. He became President of the United States and was shot by another office seeker, Charles J. Guiteau 7-2/1881, Died 09/19/81. Sometime in later life Maria Southwell’s father - Sir Edward - came to the United States to live with his daughter and her husband . He died in their home at about midnight on November 26, 1896. Burial was in Pleasantview Cemetery, Petersburg. Maria was 2nd cousin to Lord Alfred Duff-Cooper and Lady Diane.
