Groundhog Day at WildwoodThe temperature hovered around 20 degrees and The wind blew as great amounts of snow came down from a grey sky. We gathered at the shelter house and immediately set out on our quest for the Lethargic Quadruped Critter (groundhog, woodchuck, whistle pig, z-z-z-z...if you will). We found numerous burrows and then our guide let out a yelp and we all rushed to the site! It was the slowest groundhog we had ever seen, no accounting for the near blizzard conditions, and then the truth sunk in. The creature was STUFFED. We'd been set-up! In all actuality, we had found a groundhog (Hmmm...), but the poor creature would never see it's shadow again. Accepting this truth, we all trudged back to the shelter house. Mission accomplished! There was a blazing fire in the huge stone fireplace and some thoughtful person had heated mulled cider to warm the survivors of the Groundhog Day Blizzard. We sat around the fire while our guide played folk tunes on her dulcimer. As the fire died down and the cider ran out we said our goodbyes and trudged out to our cars for the trip home and happy memories to tuck away for another snowy day. Visit the Toledo Metroparks SOON. You never know what you could be missing.
