THE SALT BOX HOUSE

The Salt Box Farmhouse is the newest addition to the Wolcott Museum complex. The home, originally located on Wolf Creek Road, was built in 1841 and was occupied by Jarvis and Nancy Wood Gilbert. The Salt Box House was later sold to Daniel Flanigan and was donated to the University of Toledo in 1965 by Minnie Flanigan.

The house had never been modernized with electricity, plumbing or heating and was saved from demolition by volunteers after a fire. It was sold to the Maumee Valley Historical Society for $1.00 . In 1979 the Questers Organization, Towpath 440 Branch, pledged their support in the restoration and furnishing of the Salt Box House. The support of this group, dedicated to research and study on the merits and means of historic preservation, has been invaluable in the restoration process.
