The largest of all Great Lakes rivers, the Maumee is one of the most important inland avenues of history and culture in North America.

It was in the Maumee Valley that Native American cultures flourished for 10,000 years and where they first encountered Europeans. Control of the valley was hotly contested among the Indians, French, British and Americans for over 200 years. It was here that Chiefs Blue Jacket, Little Turtle and Tecumseh fought for their heritage. Here too the campaigns of Anthony Wayne and William Henry Harrison were waged at Forts Wayne, Defiance, Miami and Meigs.

The valley continued its role as a vital transportation corridor with the completion of the famous Miami/Wabash and Erie Canal, the Erie and Kalamazoo railroad and later railroads and highways.

The Maumee River consists of 150 miles of the most natural and scenic resources in our area. The small towns, canal paths, and scenic highways bring an enthusiasm to the valley which adds to the quality of life. The river is also skirted on both sides by rich and fertile farmland which helps feed the world.

The Maumee Valley today reflects this rich heritage as well as a vibrant future. Help us to understand and enhance the unique resources of the Maumee Valley by becoming a member now.

This non-profit organization is committed to the implementation of a comprehensive resource plan for the valley, a critical and logical step toward its future protection. Such a plan would help to educate citizens about the natural, economic, recreational, cultural and tourism resources that link the cities of Toledo and Fort Wayne and the numerous communities in-between.

You can help protect, enhance, and interpret the natural, cultural, recreational, agricultural, economic and historical resources of the Maumee Valley through supporting the Maumee Valley Heritage Corridor project.
